  1. NAVIGATING THE INTERNET: AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

  10. Peter Scott, of the University of Saskatchewan, provides us with
  11. information on how to get a free computer program available on the
  12. Internet via anonymous ftp.  It works on a PC and gives information
  13. about the resources of the Internet.  It works at a push of a
  14. button and after getting, downloading, and installing it is very
  15. user friendly.  It contains much information about what we will do
  16. next week so, if you have a PC and want a helpful little program
  17. for when you go navigating, get the following.

  19. Note that the file is zipped and will need to be unzipped.
  20.  
  21. (No ftp example this time.  I hope you are versed enough to
  22. understand the following instructions.)

  25. HYTELNET version 6.3, the utility which gives an IBM-PC user
  26. instant-access to all Internet-accessible library catalogs, FREE-NETS,
  27. CWISs, BBSs, Gophers, WAIS, etc. is now available. You can get it via
  28. anonymous ftp from:

  30. access.usask.ca
  31.  
  32. in the pub/hytelnet/pc subdirectory. It is listed as HYTELN63.ZIP.

  34. Version 6.3 is a major upgrade. Much redundant information has been
  35. deleted, and errors have been corrected. New subdirectories have been
  36. added, which has meant that many files now have a more meaningful home.
  37. Also all the new/updated files created since Version 6.2 have been
  38. incorporated.
  39.  
  40. Note: the UNZIPPED files total over 1.2 mb...but remember, you can
  41. always edit out any information you do not need, in order to save space.

  43. Information from Roy Tennant follows, slightly edited, describing how to
  44. obtain HYTELNET 6.3 from the ftp site (thanks Roy)::

  46. TO RETRIEVE HYTELNET:
  47. At your system prompt, enter:               ftp access.usask.ca
  48.       or                                    ftp 128.233.3.1
  49. When you receive the Name prompt, enter:    anonymous
  50. When you receive the password prompt, enter your Internet address.
  51. When you are at the ftp> prompt, enter:     binary
  52. At the next ftp> prompt, enter:             cd pub/hytelnet/pc
  53. Then enter:                                 get hyteln63.zip
  54. After the transfer has occurred, either
  55.    proceed with the instructions below to
  56.    retrieve the UNZIP utility (which you
  57.    need unless you already have it) or enter:   quit
  58.  
  59. The Hytelnet program is archived using a ZIP utility.  To unarchive it,
  60. you must be able to "unzip" the file.  If you have the file PKUNZIP.EXE,
  61. it will unarchive the HYTELN63.ZIP file (see below for instructions). If
  62. you do not have it, you may retrieve it with by following these
  63. instructions:

  65. TO RETRIEVE PKUNZIP:
  66. Use the above instructions for connecting to access.usask.ca
  67. At the ftp> prompt, enter:                   binary
  68. Then enter:                                  cd pub/hytelnet/pc
  69. Then enter:                                  get pkunzip.exe
  70. After the transfer has occurred, enter:      quit
  71.  
  72. TO DOWNLOAD IT TO YOUR PC:
  73. Because of the plethora of PC communications programs, I will not
  74. attempt to give step-by-step instructions here.  You should check the
  75. instructions for your software for downloading a *binary* file from your
  76. Internet account to your PC.

  78. TO UNARCHIVE HYTELN63.ZIP:
  79. Make a new directory on your hard disk (e.g., mkdir hytelnet)
  80. Copy PKUNZIP.EXE and HYTELN63.ZIP into the new directory
  81. Make sure you are in that directory, then enter: pkunzip HYTELN63
  82. It will then unarchive HYTELN63.ZIP, which contains the following files:

  84.                              HYTELNET.ZIP
  85.                              READNOW
  86.  
  87. The file READNOW. gives full instructions for un-archiving HYTELNET.ZIP.
  88. Simply put, you **MUST** unZIP the file with the -d parameter so that
  89. all the subdirectories will be recursed.

  91. To use HYTELNET, you should refer to the instructions in the release
  92. announcement by Peter Scott, or to the README file included with the
  93. package.

  95. PLEASE NOTE that I offer the above instructions as a service for those
  96. who are unfamiliar with the steps required to download and use files
  97. from network sources.  I cannot be responsible for any local variations
  98. in these procedures which may exist.  Please contact your local computer
  99. support staff if you have difficulty performing these tasks.

  102. by telnet to access.usask.ca   login with   hytelnet (lower case). For

  108. Many of you may want to check to see if HYTELNET is mounted
  109. locally on your institution's machine.  Many are now making HYTELNET
  110. available through local gophers.  Still, it is nice to have it on
  111. your machine for quick reference.
